Sometimes dogs that are older can have aches and pains just like us humans. Some dogs will suffer with arthritis or may have lost weight making them sensitive to how they lie and what they are lying on due to their reduced body mass.

There is a type of bed that older dogs may find beneficial, these are called orthopaedic beds.

An orthopaedic bed is designed with materials that are more supportive. These can include high density foam or memory foam. These materials will contour around the dogs body and provide more support to them than the traditional softer cushioned beds which can flatten their shape under the dogs weight. Orthopaedic beds really do distribute the dogs weight much more evenly and can provide a reduction in pain and strain for joints, muscles and hips.

Ailments that older dogs can suffer with including arthritis or perhaps hip dysplasia really can benefit from these types of bed.  That's not to say that younger, healthier dogs can really enjoy these beds - just like humans some prefer softer and some prefer harder mattresses!

Another ailment that older dogs can sometimes suffer from is incontinence. The material that beds are made from can help to ensure that the bed can be either easily washable or could have a cover that is easily removable and can be popped in the wash. There are also types of beds using material that is waterproof and resistant to staining and can be easily wiped down.

In summary there are multiple options of beds that are suitable for the older dog and will keep them comfortable whilst also being practical for you.
